"...During this special February 2024 leap year, let's see what's different..."
Scroll down to find dates and holidays hand-picked for most people in the caregiving equation, or people who demonstrate "care" somehow. An interesting bunch of February holidays and observances for seniors, family members of the aging, and caregivers to the elderly.
Mark down on your February special days calendar whichever dates you like to celebrate (or want to try). Some are globally or nationally recognized, while some are made up by people who wanted to establish a meaningful day of February.

📘 February 1, 2024: Optimist Day is one day to be an Optimist in action.
Optimist Day recognizes the volunteers and the youth who support their communities in many different ways. Every day, our growing communities rely on the ingenuity and energy of the next generation to be an integral part of our neighborhoods, schools, and towns. These young volunteers and the mentors who guide them connect them to the greater world around us. Their stewardship creates a hopeful future for us all.
📘 February 2, 2024: Groundhog Day when a shy marmot forecasts Winter’s end for better or worse.
A tradition since the 16th century, it’s one aged people Bill Murray enjoy chatting about in the morning, and maybe watching on TV. We snow-covered northerners sure hope Mrs. Groundhog misses her shadow this year.
📘 February 3, 2024: National Women Physicians Day honors female doctors who care for our health.
Did you know? California, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan are today’s US states with the greatest number of female physicians. Today we appreciate female physicians in our communities, and those contributing to health care research. Remember, it has been since 1920 that US women can vote, so go get learned by asking your senior family member about women's issues then and now.
📘 February 4, 2024: World Cancer Day raises awareness of cancer and its prevention.
We the human race have documented our fight against cancer for over 250 years. So at least take a minute on this freezing-cold winter morning to celebrate the life of a cancer patient and their caregiver(s). To the hope we discover better treatments soon! To cancer researchers’ undying drive to find a cure some day.
📘 February 6, 2024: National Chopsticks Day is a great day to order takeout.
People claim there’s a “right way” to use chopsticks, but in my travels watching The Food Hunter on YoutTube, I’ve seen masters of eating use chopsticks in a variety of stylish manners. Try it yourself today! Did someone say General Tso Chicken with a side of Garlic Steamed Broccoli today and Fried Rice?
📘 February 7, 2024: National Send a Card to a Friend Day reminds you to rekindle.
Don’t let long-distance stop you from being a caregiver — “a person who gives a care”. Who haven’t you talked to in a long time, that you really should? Today, there’s just no excuse. Post ‘em a greeting card, ya hear?
📘 February 9, 2024: National Pizza Day is a round, cheesy holiday.
This day is dedicated to the Italians who moved to America with the recipe for pizza. Famous for discounted pizza on this day, and delivery 365 days a year — the person who cooks in your family deserves this one day of the year… Put down the cooking utensils for pizza delivery, extra-large.
📘 February 10, 2024: Chinese New Year lets loose the Year of the Dragon..
The Spring Festival falls on a full moon on the Lunar New Year as celebrated in many Asian cultures, most popularly as Chinese New Year. Move over meek rabbits of 2023, this 2024 it’s the roaring Year of the Dragon!
📘 February 11, 2024: National Shut-in Visitation Day makes one elder less lonely.
The number of homebound elderly in the United States about doubled from 2010 to 2020. “A Shut-in” is a not-so-politically-correct way of saying homebound, defined in this research as “leaving home less than once a week”. The widespread trend of older people growing lonelier with age is way worse than 15 years ago.
📘 February 11, 2024: World Marriage Day honors husband and wife pairs only.
I thought Marriage Day would be a cool chance to celebrate the promise two people make to cherish and care for each other until the end. Then I found out World Marriage Day is run by the Catholic church as a passive aggressive “celebration” to SHAME same-sex marriage and practitioners of romantic love outside hetero-wedlock, so I don’t think this particular day cool anymore.
📘 February 13, 2024: Mardi Gras gets the New Orleans style party started with a Punjki before lent.
Did you know in 2024 that the French words Mardi Gras literally mean Fat Tuesday. Those deliciously greasy jelly-filled doughnut Pączkis are what people with Polish culture eat on Mardi Gras. Tied in the to Carnival in magnificent purple, gold, and green (official flag of Mardi Gras in three horizontal stripes) — what’ll you do to get a glamorous and disposable Mardi Gras necklace this year? If nothing more, why not watch the parade on TV and enjoy a Pączkis?
📘 February 14, 2024: Valentine's Day when Cupid’s arrow’s flung in your direction.
People complain Valentine’s Day is too commercial, but I think many of us need a reminder to spend some time caring for our loved one in body and soul. Show your love to your special someone today, in your special way.
📘 February 16, 2024: National Caregivers Day celebrates the upkeep of others’ quality of life.
Just one week after your Valentine’s Day “For Better”, comes the clause “For Worse”. Over half of all informal caregivers (unpaid caregivers) are married to or living with as a partner. This is may be one underlying reason why National Caregivers Day falls in the love-, romance-, and commitment-focused month of February.
📘 February 16, 2024: No One Eats Alone Day is for lunch with the loner.
As a budding advocate against isolation experienced by seniors, the elderly, and the homebound (i.e. old and poor), it’s fresh for me to know school-aged students be feeling disconnected and alone too. No One Eats Alone Day sheds light on Beyond Differences (organization) free downloadable PDFs teaching children to embrace differences and create a culture of belonging.
📘 February 17, 2024: Random Acts of Kindness Day makes kindness the norm for 24 hours.
Another day with an organization behind it… The The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK) promotes easy nice things you can do for strangers in public. New Zealanders started celebrating the day back in the 90s, we’ve imported their quirky, wonderful kindness into our daily grind.
📘 February 19, 2024: President's Day is the same day as founding father George Washington’s Birthday.
To the dismay of over forty dead presidents rolling in their graves, we chose to put President’s Day on the same day as just one president’s birthday, George Washington. That’s not completely true… George Washington, known for his dutiful and serious demeanor, was born on February 22, 1732. So we also moved his birthday to be more convenient for our leisure. Thanks, George and Presidents!
📘 February 20, 2024: National Comfy Day shouldn’t require buying a curious blanket shirt.
If you cringe at commercial holidays, skip forward. This is an entrepreneurial lesson plan for how to think up a new holiday and make it popular. National Comfy Day is a marketing campaign for a wearable blanket brand called The Comfy. Supposedly the blanket that wears like a soft turtle shell was invented on February 20th, 2017 by these people making money from its sales, and they paid-their-way to get this National Comfy Day marked as “official” by some holiday registry organization that calls themselves “official”.
📘 February 22, 2024: National Margarita Day is one day we’re all Parrotheads.
Your name doesn’t have to be Jimmy Buffett to waste away in Margaritaville today. Feeling a little laid-back, or maybe on the edge from all your responsibilities? Grab some Tequila Triple Sec and lime for a sunrise or sunset margarita, if you’re over 21+ and it’s safe for you to drink alcohol. Graycare is NOT a doctor.
📘 February 24, 2024: Open That Bottle Night because that brew’s aged long enough.
“It’s no longer 1842…” I think to myself eyeing the dimly lit whisky fifth in the top back of our closet. As an adult son to my elderly father, it is with my father’s express permission only that I will “Open That Bottle”. You tell me — Are you seeing wholesome and pious or do I got some daddy issues?
📘 February 26, 2024: Letter to an Elder Day finds pen pals for shut-in American seniors.
In the very same month as “Send a Card to a Friend Day” and “No One Eats Alone Day”, it’s nice to know the month of February has a special place for people experiencing isolation in their hearts. Once more, I’m taking the hint which February has now made obvious. On “Letter to an Elder Day” I’ll send a letter to a lonely elder I know, or maybe just drop it into my old neighbor's front porch.
📘 February 29, 2024: Leap Day keeps the seasons in order once every four years because earth actually spins 365 and ¼ times per year.
60 days down, 306 days to go! Leap years happen every four years or so, so use your extra time wisely when an intercalary date comes around.
📘 February 29, 2024: Rare Disease Day raises awareness for millions of people living with a rare disease.
It is memorable non-profit marketing to choose the rarest day of Leap Day to draw awareness to rare disease. The organization Rare Disease Europe (EURORDIS) proves to American social entrepreneurs that people in Paris, Brussels, and Barcelona can catch our attention by creating a calendar date for their cause. Started in 2008, with a website all about it, now in 2024 I’m telling you about it.
