This post is dedicated to old dogs who can learn new tricks. (Or at least willing to try something new.)

We’re sniffing out for Spring and Summer 2023’s best senior activities in Gratiot County.

For families with dementia, Parkinson’s, ALS, Alzheimer’s, ALS, or an otherwise challenging condition in the household.

It’s so gosh darn hard to get out of the house!

At Graycare, we’re making it easier for Gratiot County seniors to attend local events, even when memory and mobility challenges exist.

Where to find activities for seniors in Gratiot County?

These are the websites I use to find senior-friendly events. My family’s got special needs because my dad’s pretty advanced in his disease.

The SENIOR GRATIOT newsletter does our aging community good, like milk does good for the body.

SENIOR GRATIOT Newspaper

I’m writing Senior Gratiot in all capital letters because that’s how the letters look on the top of this newspaper.

You can sign up to receive it monthly in the mail if you live in Gratiot County. Maybe you have to pay, or donate to the Gratiot County Commission on Aging - ask my mom! You can read Senior Gratiot online or download the PDF for free, here.

Google Events Search

No, not Google Search. The special Google Event Search. Here, I’ve searched Google Events for Gratiot County for you to click. Wow, those look like fun!

Alma’s hosting the Highland Festival.

St. Louis’ Flag Day Ceremony is attracts veterans

Breckenridge invites people to visit on Arbor Day for a cemetery clean up.

Shepherd’s famous Maple Syrup Festival is a reason to wake up early on a Saturday.

Ithaca’s got a “Light the Night” Glow Stick Run coming up in June, which will be a gander even if your not in shape to run 5k.

Facebook

I don’t use Facebook, but my mom does. I’ve got to hand it to her, Facebook is one of the best places to find local happenings and local services you can’t find at businesses by the highway.

For seniors, the Gratiot County Commission on Aging’s Facebook Page is an essential place to find upcoming activities where seniors and their families can get together.

Gratiot County Happenings Facebook Page isn’t particularly tailored to seniors, but most happenings in this county are friendly for all ages, and this page is a great source for that!

Local Government-Run Event Pages

Not all activities promoted by the government are as boring as a board meeting. These local listing websites (run by tax payer’s dollars) are another good source for activities around Gratiot Country which welcome the community.

  • The City of Ithaca serves people spanning Gratiot County’s Six Corners by listing events from (Ithaca and) Alma, St. Louis, Breckenridge, Ashley, Bannister, Fulton, and that’s all she wrote! (Thanks, Ithaca!)
  • The Gratiot Area Chamber of Commerce lists some of the county’s most accessible and low key activities, well suited for seniors who have difficulty getting around, or need a slower-paced environment, with less gosh darn racket ya can’t even hear!
  • The Gratiot County Community Foundation has yet to build their community calendar page (as of March 2023), but I’m looking forward to it!

In addition, for you extra outgoing types, a 2019 MDHHS PDF lists phone numbers for six senior activity centers operating in Gratiot County.

These are the MDHHS Listed Senior Services in Gratiot County, Michigan:

  • Commission on Aging 989-875-5246
  • EightCAP, Senior Volunteer Programs – Foster 616-754-9315
  • Grandparent, Senior Companion 616-754-2660
  • Gratiot Community Senior Center 989-681-4341

Reserve One of Gratiot’s Many Parks

Ithaca, Alma, St. Louis and other cities put forms online you can fill out to reserve a park or pavilion or shelter in the area. There are Gratiot County Parks outside city lines you can reserve too.

For a Michigan summer barbecue outdoor activity, one of those parks with the barbecue pits built right in, that sounds just right.

In addition to “Parks”, you can also register “Special Events” in other venues.
