Michigan has casinos across the mitten — from dense urban resorts in Detroit to large tribal destination casinos in rural areas.

Some are worth a short drive, some are worth planning a vacation around. None let you gamble on a riverboat.

Today, we’ll take a look at Michigan’s largest, most popular, and easily drivable casinos to learn which ones might be worth your time. You can drive, park, and game if you're all set for some responsible Michigan-style gambling destinations.

How many casinos are there in Michigan?

According to Wikipedia data in 2026, there are 26 casinos in Michigan. 3 of them are commercial casinos, all 3 located in Detroit. The other 23 of them are tribal casinos.

Michigan.org, best known by Pure Michigan, the state’s official tourism site, lists 25 Michigan casinos.

However, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) mapped and charted 24 tribal casinos throughout the fine State of Michigan.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board publishes maps and lists showing…

Which Michigan Casinos Are Most Popular

Michigan casinos don’t publicly report the number of visitors visiting them. Detroit casinos (on public land) are required to report revenue and market share, but tribal casinos only sometimes release figures about their cashflow.

These five casinos are perhaps the most popular casinos in Michigan, based on publicly available revenue data (on the MGCB For Detroit Casinos Only) and the casinos' regional features (my own common sense knowing cities).

#1 - MGM Grand Detroit

MGM Grand Detroit consistently leads the Detroit casino market in gaming revenue. Its downtown location, hotel accommodations, convention center, and urban customer base with international airport nearby make the MGM Grand Detroit Michigan’s highest-earning casino.

People like its multi-story feel, different from most tribal casinos on wide land. The casino, hotel, convention center, restaurants, spa, and parking are stacked on top of each other in an urban skyscraper.

#2 - MotorCity Casino Hotel

MotorCity is another Detroit casino, widely regarded as Detroit’s locals’ casino. It has a more familiar, less tourist-oriented feel that appeals to regular visitors who value routine and comfort over spectacle.

Compared to the MGM Grand integrated complex, MotorCity’s straightforward layout and familiar atmosphere can feel calmer and easier to navigate, especially for people who prefer short, low-stakes visits.

#3 - Hollywood Casino at Greektown

Even though it’s Detroit’s least popular casino, the Hollywood Casino at Greektown is still Michigan’s third most frequented casino, simply due to its location in big city Detroit.

Greektown is a tourist destination for kebab restaurants and entertainment, to people first “Opa!” flaming cheese then hit the casino for dessert. To make a gambling night of Greektown, play a few slots, grab food nearby, and move on without committing to a full resort experience.

#4 - Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort

Soaring Eagle is one of the highest-revenue tribal casinos in Michigan. By gaming floorspace, it’s Michigan’s largest casino with a wide horizontal campus adorned with many eagle murals and statues.

The catch? You’ve got to make the trip to Central Michigan. It’s in the middle-of-nowhere, so it runs a destination-resort paired with hotels, concerts, and large entertainment venues.

#5 - FireKeepers Casino Hotel

FireKeepers sits in the middle of Detroit, Lansing, and Grand Rapids, a location that’s maybe worth the drive for people living in these three major Michigan cities.

Popular for its modern design and frequent updates, especially to its slot floor, FireKeepers is probably Michigan’s most innovative gambling experience, in terms of new and rare imported slot machines to spark your curiosity in a sparkly screen for folks 18+ or 21+ with ID.

I’m Bored, Healthy, and Wealthy. Which Casino Should I Drive To Now?

You’re in luck if you’re in Detroit, since the city has the highest casino density in the state. People in Grand Rapids can drive to Gun Lake or Little River. It’ll take people in Lansing under 2 hours to arrive at a good casino. Those in Gratiot County should drive due north to Soaring Eagle.

Which Michigan Casinos Do Slot Players Love Most?

State-wide, Soaring Eagle is most famous for their variety of slots and their large floorspace dedicated to slots. FireKeepers is noteworthy for new and modern slot machines to mesmerize guests. Within Detroit, the MGM Grand Detroit has the best variety of slots.

Variety — for slots it means different themes (classic reels, video slots, licensed games, foreign imports, flashy lights/screens) and slots for penny and nickel budgets.

Why Choose Michigan Casinos? (Stay Responsible)

Gambling is a perfectly legal way to slowly turn money into lights, sounds, and stories — and you’ll probably lose money if you gamble — in Michigan just like anywhere else.

While you’re chasing slots, food, shows, or just something else to curb your boredom, Michigan’s casinos range from dense urban towers to massive rural resorts.

Michigan has 24 to 26 casinos, depending on who’s counting, and 5 of them are probably most popular — based on revenue and location, and being worth the drive.

Michigan is a nice place to spend entertainment money comfortably and have a good time doing it.
