Today we’re talking about my experience with SAM-e for depression. I’m a 35 year old male who supports family caregiving activities for my dad who’s 74 with Parkinson’s and dementia.
Rewind to over a year ago when I moved back in with my parents to help shoulder the burden my mom had taken onto herself.
In a different way than the Fresh Prince, my life got flip turned upside down. I experienced hopelessness, throbbed with guilt, harbored resentment, and felt bad about myself.
I tried SAM-e the over-the-counter “mood support supplement” #ad after becoming aware of several scientific studies which supported SAM-e’s positive effects.

I don’t know the whole science behind SAM-e, so I can only tell you which brand of SAM-e I chose and why.
So far, I’ve considered two kinds of SAM-e.
First, Doctor’s Best Doctor's Best SAM-e 400mg Mood and Joint Tablets because the double-dose might make me extra happy.
Second, Nature’s Craft SAM-e 200mg Mood Support Supplement because I’ve used their Uric Acid Formula for unrelated ailments with marked success.
I purchased an entire package, and took the dosage as directed: a 400mg tablet, 1 tablet daily, taken between meals.
For 4 weeks I continued, without noted effects. This was a time when I was coping with my dad’s disease in-person for the first time, a time navigating out unhealthy work circumstances.
I’m telling you this because it's unfair to expect a world of change from SAM-e.
Getting prescription medication for depression is as easy as ever in 2023, with several services online or just a phone call away. Eager beaver doctors are waiting for your appointment, so they can hear you say you’re sad, and then prescribe you a common generic brand depression medication.
I started with SAM-e when I was in a world of turmoil. I think I might try again, now that I’m more stable in my day-to-day. Combine with the mindfulness and self-care tools I’ve picked up along the way, SAM-e might give me an extra nudge towards smiling and laughing more.
