Leppien Park is tucked away from downtown St. Louis and worth the visit.

The full name of the Leppien Park in St. Louis, Michigan is the Fred and Gertrude Leppien Memorial Park.

The local Leppien Family is a local contributor to parks both public and private, both in town and off the beaten path. Knowing a tidbit of its history made my visit even more enjoyable.

How to get there?

Leppien Park is located at the address: Surrey Rd, St. Louis, MI 48880

While on M-46 (Monroe Road in the St. Louis section), turn south onto Devon Dr, and in just a few dozen feet, turn left onto Surrey Rd, and you’ll see the circle parking lot. Surrey Rd is a dead end, so you can’t miss it if you stay on Surrey Rd.

Is it any good?

I went there on a nice sunny day so that I can tell you myself!

1. A Little Hard to Find

Finding Leppien Park on the west-south-west side of the pine river, it’s a perfect spot for watching sunrise over the water. If you live in St. Louis or Alma, it’s easy-access from M-46, and M-46 is easy-access from 127 for out of towners.

There’s somewhat hard-to-find parking lot with room for about 10 cars, which good handicap accessibility.

2. Manicured Landscaping

First impressions after arriving of Leppien Park are those of really great landscaping.

The tall deciduous soft trees tower like manicured chess pieces, and make you feel like you’re inside A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Whoever’s in charge of trimming their trees deserves a raise!

3. Riverside Circle Sidewalk

The riverbank is approximately 350 feet long.

Those trying to keep hearty health would love the short laps all on paved sidewalk.

The sidewalk goes in an oblong circle between the riverbank and the playground, so you pass by water, trees, bushes, signs, and children playing while keeping your heart rate at a healthy level to lengthen your lifetime.

4. Pavilion and Playground

There are more than one pavilion with picnic benches and BBQ pits for summertime cookouts, or catching some shade from the sun.

Kids will love the climbable barn structure, the merry go round, and the “Big Purple Dinosaurs” that have friendly faces.

The more outdoorsy can launch their boat or kayak from a dock, which also makes a fine dock for fishing on the Pine. The City of St. Louis built the dock and shoreline safety rocks back in 2015, and they’re still getting great use today.

You can reserve a pavilion for a family outing or other small event.

Parks, Lyrics, and Leppien: The Mid-Michigan Family History Mystery

The local Leppien Family is a local contributor to parks both public and private, both in town and off the beaten path. This is confirmed!

I’ve got a hunch they like singing songs, too.

Although the family connection in regards to song is unconfirmed, a certain Fred and Gertrude Leppien with roots in Saginaw, Michigan birthed daughters who would go on to become a published vocal group The Leppien Sisters.

40 acres of what is today called Camp Cutler west-south-west in Riverdale was donated by Gertrude Leppien in 1975. Camp Cutler is a privately-owned wilderness overnight and day camp (it’s an “Inc.”), which you can make a reservation for still in 2023.
