Incontinence guards for men are lighter dryness protection than a full pair of around-the-waist briefs. They let you keep wearing your underwear of choice, plus one discrete layer to soak up drips and dribbles.
To secure a guard inside your underwear, you use little stickers on its wings. After unwrapping and unfolding a fresh guard, you peel off the little paper strip from the wing’s sticker part, then position the guard into your underpants and stick it to the fabric.
You’ll figure it out your first time.
Typically earlier in the progression of aging-related bladder and bowel control issues, people who at risk of sparring drips or light leaks employ guards for extra security in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s — whenever bladder control first becomes a challenge.

Men’s incontinence guards and shields (same thing) are generally made by the same brands that make adult diapers and incontinence briefs (same thing).
You determine the level of absorbance you need by the number of drips, dots, or meters on the packaging. One company who sells incontinence guards, is likely to offer the full range from LIGHT, to MEDIUM, to HEAVY, and EXTRA HEAVY.
Realistic expectations regarding guards are to manage minor urine leaks.
An incontinence guard can handle light incontinence while wearing regular underwear, but moderate to severe incontinence is better suited by incontinence briefs which replace regular underwear.
“Start with a shield for less liquid, then upgrade to a guard for more liquid.” Both provide single-use disposable incontinence protection for a man’s front-side, by adhering an urine-absorbent insert inside your underwear. Both shields and guards cup a man’s member in case of minor to moderate wetness.
Start with...
🛡️ Incontinence Shields = Lightweight Dryness for Men
Then try...
🛡️ Incontinence Guards = Regular to Heavyweight Dryness for Men
An incontinence “Shield” is the light version which can absorb only low volumes of liquid. An incontinence “Guard” is the more generally used name for absorbent men’s underwear inserts to keep you dry. Depend and Tena brands, for example, label their light absorbency guard as a shield, and label their other medium to maximum absorbency guards as guards.
From what I’ve seen, guards are “One Size Fits Most” and don’t range in sizes such as your waist measure, or such as another downstairs measure. You don’t have to worry about sizing, instead, you just pick the level of absorbency needed.
Do NOT buy booster pads thinking they are guards. They look similar, but they are not. Incontinence guards work with regular boxers or briefs, but booster pads are only used in tandem with adult diapers. Booster pads are placed inside adult diapers (see “for use inside adult diaper” on the package of a booster pad). They are called in for dryness reinforcements, only when dryness protection is already in place by wearing a diaper. After your first test, you will ask for a refund for your booster pads stating: “these booster pads absorbed the urine but my cotton boxers still got wet”.
If you’re wanting to wear your regular underwear, and have an added layer of discreet protection inside, then incontinence guards (not booster pads) are what you need.

With max, overnight, or super in stock — Tena guards typically cost more than Depend guards, so why do thousands to Tena loyalists spend extra nickels per guard? Both Tena and Depend fit inside underwear, briefs, or boxer briefs — so roomy boxers that wear loose won’t be the safest fit for any kind of guard. Odor reduction, layers absorption cores, and shaped for full-circumference seal — Thus far I cannot identify any important reason to choose Tena over Depend (in the case Tena costs more than Depend), except you might not like the picture of the man on the Depend’s 2024 marketing label, for one example of preference, to prefer Tena’s package without a man photographed.

FitRight is a brand owned and operated by the trusted Medline medical equipment and accessories brand. As such, their guard isn’t much different from the Depend or Tena reviewed, but the FitRight brand in general aims to stop senior men’s incontinence with their absorbent inserts. FitRight’s unique adhesive strip runs the full length — just one strip, pretty easy to use for big and/.or trembly hands. Maybe what happened in their product history is, Medline’s old ContourFit unisex guards didn’t sell too well with anyone who has a strong gender identity. So the company wised up to a man’s membered wishes with FitRight just for men.

NorthShore is like premium insurance for light to moderate men’s urinary incontinence. NorthShore’s guards are generally pricier than both Depend and Tena guards. NorthShore’s premium features cover the premium cost. It’s backwards-triangle curvature doesn’t wad up between your legs as much. It’s “Dry Fast Core” claims to soak up the water faster in that emergency situation which could save you from costly social embarrassment better than less-expensive guards.

Men who love their Mother Earth will pay more for Because guards. Because brand keeps it simple, because they only sell one type of guard. The reason it’s premium and typically costs more than Depend or Tena is probably because of its sustainable materials and manufacturing, with PEFC certification and carbon-neutral operations plus recycled packaging now in your pants.

An innovative pick comes in Prevail’s latest guards. Similar to NorthShore, this Prevail brand offers a fast-drying gel core, which Prevail calls MAXSORB gel technology. Its omni-door means the wings stretch a little bit better to cup your junk nicely. Breathability, at long last, makes for a nicer duration of hours wearing guards.

Tranquility sells their guards in bulk for over one-month’s daily guards per package. They claim to be the most absorbent male guard on the market, which sounds good enough, until you think about bladder control it like a progressive health issue common to more men than you know… By the time you need a max-absorbency guard, you can now consider switching to low-absorbency incontinence underwear (instead of regular underwear plus a guard).

The only guards that come in a cardboard box come from Attends, folded thin unashamed to look like a N-95 single fold covid mask to fit a man’s body. Its adhesive strip only rounds the top crease, different from the more common full length adhesive strip which has a longer larger reach and greater overall surface area (the bigger sticker sticks better).
