ABL is discreet shorthand for Accidental Bowel Leakage.

When shopping for a discreet solution for minor back-side leaks, there are limited options available before you’ll require an around-the-waist adult incontinence product.

What is ABL?

Accidental Bowel Leakage (ABL) is when a person unintentionally sets free a bowel movement. Technically, ABL can range from “Light” to “Heavy” amounts of discharge. But people generally use the acronym ABL to describe “Very Light” fecal incontinence, such as trace leaks and minor spots, or earlier in an aging person’s progressive incontinence challenge.

Can ABL liners and pads handle “Light”, “Moderate”, or “Heavy” fecal incontinence?

  • Small products absorb less. Smaller incontinence products can absorb and contain less moisture. Small-sized ABL butterfly-style products which fold close to the anus cannot absorb as much moisture as larger sized fecal incontinence products, such as unisex liners/pads for “Light” ABL or adult diapers for “Moderate” to “Heavy” ABL. The more duty, the greater amount of absorbent material needed.
  • Trusted advice for “Number Two” incontinence. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), published a simple overview of fecal incontinence treatment options outside my shopping cart stocked with of 2024’s best incontinence products for small amounts of “Number Two” you can buy when researched and ready.
  • Fit for most men and women. Men, I have failed to find viable non-diaper fecal incontinence solutions designed specifically for men. With pride in mind, I forewarn the following products are mostly unisex.
  • Beware of boosters. Boosters are shaped the same as ABL pads/liners, however boosters lack the impermeable (plastic) layer which stops fluid and matter from soaking through the booster. That’s because boosters should be used for added absorption inside the adult diaper you’re already wearing (the primary incontinence product). An ABL pad is basically a booster with an outside layer that doesn’t let wet through. You will be an unsatisfied customer of fecal incontinence products if you buy a soak-through booster instead of a water-proof ABL pad or liner.
💧 For “Very Light” ABL: Specialized Incontinence Products

#1 B-Sure Absorbant Pads

🔘 Shop B-Sure on Amazon #ad.
🔘 Shop B-Sure at Walmart.
🔘 Shop B-Sure on Simply Medical.
🔘 Shop B-Sure on Carewell.
🔘 Shop B-Sure on Wellbefore.

B-Sure’s ABL pads are 2024’s best for “Very Light” anal leakage. B-Sure is built especially for in between the buttocks. Its crease-folding absorbent sheet easily positions between your hind cheeks, as easy-applied using your middle finger to press into place. Finally, pull into comfortable position your normal underwear and clothing with B-Sure targeted dryness protection undetectable as you carry on with your day.

#2 Butterfly Body Liners (by Attends)

🔘 Shop Butterfly S/M or L/XL on Amazon.
🔘 Shop Butterfly on Wellbefore.

You are now familiar with the “Butterfly Style” fold-to-skin anus area coverage pads like B-Sure and like this Butterfly by Attends. A Butterfly Health, Inc. leader forecasted as early as 2014: “...there have been disposable brief type products for heavy bowel leakage for decades, there have been no products available for people who experience light bowel leakage…"

️#3 The Clean Seat Undie Protector

🔘 Shop The Clean Seat on Amazon.

Only useful for “Very, Very Light” ABL, The Clean Seat avoids embarrassing outward stains in the seat area of your pants. Bowel movements aren’t typed specifically on its packaging — instead this product is stated for crotch-area perspiration, urinary leakage, and hemorrhoids. Each of these moist and fowl things can be solved by absorption (getting all the leakage) and containment (away from the clothing).

️#4 NanoDri Washable Sweat Pad

🔘 Shop NanoDri on Amazon.

Recommended to avoid what some people describe as a “swampy” situation. The NanoDri sweat pad is one of the only reusable between the buttocks pads which can be tossed in the wash (with regular laundry, or separate as you please). When worn inside a snug-fit regular underwear, the NanoDri top repellent layer protects outer clothing, and its inner absorption layer locks in crotch moisture. Not recommended to handle heavier loads.

#5 Medline Skinfold Dry Sheet

🔘 Shop Medline on Amazon.
🔘 Shop Medline on Avacare Medical #ad.
🔘 Shop on Medline Official Website.

Medline brand’s all-purpose body crevice dry sheet is made for sedentary or bed-bound people who are getting hot and sweaty. I’ve deduced these dry sheets can fit into a butt crack, because as advertised, these dry sheets can also fit in armpits and under flaps of fat. It represents a different approach: with two-sided absorption, it won’t protect outer clothing from getting a spot of undesirable moisture.

#6 Tranquility ThinLiner Absorbent Sheets

🔘 Shop Tranquility on Amazon.
🔘 Shop Tranquility on Avacare Medical.
🔘 Shop Tranquility on Simply Medical.

More evidence that this all-purpose featherlight disposable rag is pretty good for fecal incontinence, Tranquility’s packaging states “Protects underwear from fecal leakage or light diarrhea.”

💧💧 For “Light” ABL: Unisex Liners and Pads

#7 San “Special”

🔘 Shop San on Amazon.
🔘 Shop San on Avacare Medical.
🔘 Shop San on Simply Medical.
🔘 Shop San on Wellbefore.

Get the San labeled “Special” for both urinary and fecal incontinence. San is a brand by Abena company. If none of the specialized products which fit between the buttocks crease are working for you — because your level of sweat, leakage, or other moisture is become unmanageable by small-sized incontinence products… Then these “Liners” admittedly resemble women’s monthly pads, so men prefer the name “Liners” over the name “Pads”. It’s nice to see on Abena San brand’s “Special Label” double incontinence pads. (The “double” means “Number One” and “Number Two”.)

#8 FitRight Liners (by Medline Medical)

🔘 Shop FitRight Regular or Plus on Amazon.
🔘 Shop FitRight on Avacare Medical.
🔘 Shop FitRight Regular or Plus on Medline Official Website.

FitRight is a brand owned and operated by the trusted Medline Medical Supplies company. Their unisex liners are primarily for urinary incontinence, but also may absorb “Light” fecal incontinence. Once again, these are “Liners” or “Pads” (same thing) which can be inserted inside underwear, because they have an absorbent layer to small amounts of poo and an impermeable to protect underwear from embarrassing stains. (Refer to the fact “boosters” look similar but lack the impermeable layer.)

️#9 NorthShore DynaDry

🔘 Shop NorthShore on Amazon.
🔘 Shop the NorthShore Official Website.

NorthShore brand is the top-shelf premium brand for a range of comfortable and high-quality disposable incontinence wearables. This package labeled “DynaDry” is a unisex large shaped pad worn inside your regular underwear for maybe “Moderate” urinary incontinence, and maybe “Light” bowel incontinence. Another benefit is its sizing from S to M to L to XL to XXL because back-side protection is a precise science.

#10 McKesson Ultra Liners

🔘 Shop McKesson on Amazon.
🔘 Shop McKesson on Avacare Medical.
🔘 Shop McKesson on Simply Medical.
🔘 Shop McKesson on Wellbefore.

Another unisex liner with polymer core for absorbing both pee and poo in light amounts. Comfort has been considered by lining a cloth-like backsheet to caress your sensitive skin.

#11 LivDry Incontinence Pad Insert for Men and Women

🔘 Shop LivDry on Amazon.

Available in three sizes for adults 1600, 2000, and 2400, LivDry economy brand’s easily-readable packaging makes it clear why incontinence insert is better than a booster. It’s shaped “… Just like booster pads but with an improved non-passthrough structure…” Which means you don’t have to pay for an entire around-the-waist diaper, nor do you have to pay for a booster pad to put inside the diaper. (Refer to the fact “boosters” look similar but lack the impermeable layer.)

️#12 Escape Plus Protective Pads

🔘 Shop Escape Plus on Essential 360.

Essential 360 is the company behind Escape Plus long-length protective pad wrapping under the crotch straight front to back. You won't find these sold on Amazon, but might be interested to learn about Essential 360’s  discreet delivery program for all kinds of common incontinence products, like this unisex underwear insert with long reach.

💧💧💧 For “Moderate” ABL: Adult Diapers

When the amount of accident turns from “Light” to “Moderate”, then the smaller, lighter, between-the-legs or in-the-crease incontinence product are no match.

When ABL becomes a moderate ordeal, you will likely need to consider around-the-waist incontinence products, in no confusing terms… Adult diapers provide better protection for “Moderate” and “Heavy” amounts of adult ABL.
