There’s an off chance you’ll regret searching Quora for answers to life’s toughest questions.

One month ago I uninstalled my Quora apps on my phone and logged out of my Quora account on my computer browser, then proceeded to delete Quora.com associated cookies inside my computer browser settings privacy menu.

I had a bad experience there, but I understand why. “Whatever you look for, you'll find.” This quote from Tony Robbins is true on most social platforms. It happened to me on Quora.

Quora: The Q&A Platform for finding answers when you don’t know where else to look.

I’d like to restart by congratulating Quora for consistent question and answer format content since wayyy back in 2010. In San Francisco, where new viral softwares take startup form, it’s hard to keep millions of people happy for 15 years.

Quora (and I quote) “...bring[s] together people with different perspectives so they can understand each other better…”. [About Quora]

Does Quora contain unsafe imagery?

It depends on who you are. Different people using Quora see different imagery on Quora.

Probably, if you look around Quora at wholesome content, then Quora will learn that about you, and show you mostly wholesome content.

However, if you engage with unsafe content, by viewing it on Quora, then the platform is more likely to serve you unsafe content. Because it knows you’ve touched unsafe content before, Quora is more likely to show you more related content.

Careful What Ye Seek, Lest Ye Shall See

I’m a troubled person who has used BetterHelp for over three years. BetterHelp has been a more reliable and affordable medium to me than any in-person. This is in a concerted, long-term effort with a therapist of choice to improve my ability to manage my life, my attitude, my behavior, my relationships.

As a troubled person, I suppose “what goes around comes around” turns true. My research focused on troubles of mine: childhood trauma, relationships between adult family members, and some decline in body and mind I’ve been experiencing as I get older.

It serves me right after I brought my issues into Quora’s volumes, but may I please take this one moment to demonstrate how other users might encounter somewhat troubling experiences too.

When I’m on my phone or computer, I have an uncomfortable question related to my mental health or overall well-being.

I’m sitting in my chair whining about no one to talk with.

I most commonly turn to Google and search for an expert in the area. Sometimes Google will share with me a Quora I would learn from overtime.

Quora got to know my troubled side when I entered queries about my personal conditions or mental health issues or exact relationship problems.

It started to feel unsafe when Quora started showing me more related content, elaborating upon darker themes than I’d originally requested, especially graphic medical images and detailed illustrations of unsafe behaviors.

After seeking emotional support from Quora for one too many issues, Quora decided I’m a ball of negativity and floated more gross depictions to me the longer I stayed on the platform.

Summary

For most adults, I think Quora is still a good place to search for fact-based and opinion-type answers. But there are better platforms for emotional support than Quora.

If you let Quora know a few of your personal traumas, frustrations, and confusions, Quora might up the ante with similar themes, even more sensationalized, graphic, and unsafe content to catch the attention of people prone to ask Quora in a sad state of mind.

I uninstalled Quora one day after seeing detailed methods by which one historic scientist studied the act of ending one’s own life. The content was a step by step guide on how to do it, sensationalized from and disguised as historic fact. It showed authentic historical-looking hand-drawn illustrations of the act too.

I can’t tell you more, because I clicked away. I can’t unsee what I saw there.
