Older Michiganians Day is a forty years tradition showing the importance of Michigan seniors’ voices in shaping the future of Michigan.
Established in 1982 by the Michigan Legislature, this annual event honors the contributions of Michigan’s seniors while spotlighting crucial issues related to aging.
On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, seniors and their advocates gathered at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing to recognize Older Michiganians Day.
Since the celebration has roots in Lansing, we expect the event to also take place at the Michigan State Capitol for 2025. But you can also discuss Michigan aging issues with local legislators to advocate for county-level programs, or your regional Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan (AAAAM).
Key issues to discuss include expanding Medicaid for long-term care, funding for senior nutrition programs, and protecting pensions.
Older Michiganians Day was born from a push by senior advocacy organizations like the Michigan Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MAAAA).
They wanted one special day where aging adults could raise concerns about their concerns with issues like healthcare, financial security, and independence.
Between lobbies in 1981 and 1982, older Michiganders’ benefits were the talk of the Michigan Legislation.
The OLDER MICHIGANIANS ACT (Act 180 of 1981) endeavors to offer government services to Michigan seniors:
AN ACT to create a commission on services to the aging within the executive office of the governor; to create an office of services to the aging as an autonomous entity within the department of management and budget; to authorize the designation of area agencies on services to the aging and to prescribe their powers and duties; to establish certain programs relating to older persons;

Older Michiganians Day is closely associated with the Michigan Legislature, it may have been the push from senior organizations like the Michigan Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MAAAA) which really established the yearly celebration.
I’m just saying, the term “Older Michiganians” was hot back in the 1980s.
Fast forward to today, Older Michiganians Day is still widely celebrated by members of the Michigan Area Agencies on Aging Association (MAAAA). The MAAAA itself was established in 1974, so it’s only 8 years older than Older Michiganians Day. Anyway, it’s a match made in Michigan, since the MAAAA is famous for service delivery promoting Michigan seniors’ independence and well-being across the state.
Thanks to efforts as early as the 80s, Older Michiganians Day is now a yearly affair between Michigan’s older people and legislators.
