My Parkinson's support group organizer tells me you can't take care of another person if you can't take care of yourself.

I'm not much for self-care, but I thought up some way to work it into my routine.

I usually take a shower downstairs to clean up in the morning, but we've got a small bath upstairs with little whirlpool jets, a ceiling vent and heater, plus a convenient laundry chute that's still fun to use as an adult.

Maybe once or twice a week I could take a regenerative bath instead of a salaryman's shower?

Take Care the First Time

Over the past month or so I've made bathing (instead of showering) a regular thing. The last time I tookAs a 35 year old man, I needed to re-learn how to take a bath. I'm bigger now and less flexible.

I've only encountered two safety hazards when bathing. Please be careful about slipping, falling, and hot water scalding.

  • Watch out for slips. Especially when using a soapy self-care helper, the bath's surface beneath the surface is especially slippery, especially when you first place your foot in the shower.
  • Watch out for scalding hot water. If you dip you foot it starts to feel too hot, take your foot out immediately! It takes a while for the foot to tell your brain it's too hot for skin.

For No-Nonsense Self-Care, Which is Best?

If you're at Walgreen's staring down the bathing aisle for the first time, for your first bath in years... Here are a few of your options for surprisingly relaxing bath time sensations.

How to put together a home bath self-care starter pack - even if I'm not that into self-care?

These are the three products I chose to try out myself, and I'll be reviewing each here on Graycare.

  • Dr. Teal's Foaming Bath - Bubbles are fun. Everyone knows that. But another perk of bubbles is a literal extra layer of privacy in the bathtub. As a caregiver I have to bathe with the door unlocked sometimes so that someone else in the household might use the bathroom (not proud, but true). With a body-cloaking film of white bubbles above my piggy body, someone can use the toilet without too much bathtub body exposure.
  • Purple Canyon Bath Bombs - I like to keep it natural, and have a special preference for menthol, cooling, tingly, or otherwise stimulating skincare stuff. With eucalyptus and lavender fizzies built right in, I was sold on Purple Canyon over all other bath bombs.
  • Aveeno Bath Treatment - I was attracted to Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment for it's natural oatmeal feeling and low cost. I'm not much for extra scents so, a subtle creamy oatmeal sounds nice.
