The Sammons Preston Plate Guard as shown on my kitchen table with some delicious Chinese Boiled Pork and Scallion dumplings.

It hasn’t been a year since our family started using the plate crown, and it’s become a common mealtime partner.

What is the plate crown? On Amazon, they’re called plate guards for the elderly #ad, but in my household, we call it Dad’s Plate Crown.

My family uses the Sammons Preston Food Guard.

The Good

  • I see my dad using forks and spoons to shovel peas and rice against the wall of the plate crown. It appears helpful for independent eating of small, mushy, hard to stab plate food.
  • It’s especially helpful at the end of the meal, where it’s impolite to put your mouth around the rim of the plate, the plate crown helps you join the Clean Plate Club.

The Bad

  • Sometimes it slides off when it doesn’t fit the plate just right. Not a huge deal. You just gotta know which plate to put the crown on.
  • Ours is metal, and kinda sharp. I could foresee sliced skin in a worst-case-scenario type accident with these fine metal edges. I wonder if there are any plate crowns with silicone or some other washable and touchable material.

Which other plates are good for Parkinson's?

We originally bought the Sammons Preston plate guard because we wanted something that would work with the dinner plates we already have, flexible in size for different sized plates. We wanted something that’d last long, so stainless steel works great.

But knowing what I do now having watched my dad use it, having washed it by hand and by dishwasher, I’d be open to trying a different plate that slips off in the middle of the meal.

The Scoop Plate

How about a bright red or blue scoop plate?

It precisely solved my main pain point with the metal plate guard. The Scoop Plate doesn’t have a detachable part, so no more jumping off the plate when my dad pushes the plate guard too hard.

In my home, the plates are pure white. Scoop plates are available in white too, which would match the color of my other dinnerware.

We’ll just call it dad’s fancy plate.
