The grid is strong with you, young COB sportster.
COBs are different from regular LEDs because COBs have bright little diodes lined up in a square pattern.
Each dot is a square that emits light. COB consumer products arrange many diodes into multiples to form a larger, brighter square.

COB (Chip-on-Board) is a new LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology for sidewalk bright LED light and a battery that lasts.
Chip on board (COB) technology has come a long way over the years.
Back in the 2010s, COB was a new acronym known to few.
Then in the 2015s, people in the United States started purchasing COB lights with circle mirrors on them. At that point in time, COBs still resembled regular LED torch lights. The powerful COB at the center was surrounded by a UFO-shaped reflector to beam the light straight forward. At that point in time, people didn’t truly understand the potential of COB’s mini diodes lined up in a grid.
Sadly in the early 2020s, most Americans grasped flashlights with their hand the same way they did back in the 1980s - with AA batteries-in-the-handle bulky flashlights - heavy and hard on your wrist.
We were treating COBs like LEDs, but tomorrow things will be better.
We’ve learned better uses for COBs since the 2010s. We’ve learned better uses for flashlights since the 1980s.
Promising in 2025, some Americans are smarter about COB technology than they ought to be. COB flashlights just get better and better for personal use in the near future. It’s an opportune time for further development of COB lights to build a modern US History.
What can’t COB do these days? I’ve got a bright outlook for COB safety lights, to become smaller and more powerful, to shine strong pure colors, to flash quick and start a party.

The miniature COB safety light that fits in one hand gets 5 out of 5 stars.
When I’m walking in my neighborhood, my COB safety light is my preferred and most favorite flashlight to use
It’s safe for nightwalking, easily portable by clip-on or in-pocket.
It’s the preferred mini handheld flashlight for indoor and outdoor use.
You can hold it six different ways, so your wrist doesn’t get cramped in one position.
You can hold it six different ways, to show of your individual COB style.
COB mini lights can shine forward to see what’s in front of you.
COB mini lights can halo down on your sidewalk walking legs.
With 3 brightness settings - HIGH, LOW, and FLASH - you’ll find your favorite.
If I keep the light on and put it in my pocket, you can see the square glow through khaki fabric.
The battery lasts for about three hours super bright.
The battery becomes less bright slowly over time as the battery drains. It’s nice, because the diodes gradually dim to 100% - 66% - 50% - 33% - 12.5% brightness when you need to recharge.
It’s just to get dimmer and dimmer and dimmer cause that’s good technology. There is no ONE to ZERO binary scenario where it suddenly powers OFF on you.

Broad-beam COB flashlights are better for pedestrian safety than forward-beam LED flashlights.
I haven’t found a COB at Home Depot yet, but I haven’t looked very hard. I bought mine on Amazon, in a multipack at unit prices between $2.50 and $10.00 dollars. I compare the best COB brands of 2025 down below.
COB lights are low-cost right now because they’re an undiscovered A+ product. I expect the price of COB lights will increase over 2030 as more US manufacturers bring American COB tech to market.
You click it on high beam, then click again for low beam, and click a third time for flashing lights. Enjoy the feel of the soft silicone buttons.
That’s what happens if you click three times quickly.
But if you leave the light on a certain setting for several minutes, then your first click will power OFF the light. That’s called intuitive design. It’s intuitive because when you’re walking around with a low beam, you probably want to power OFF at first click.
I love my COB mini light’s metal frame with five out of five stars.
I’d buy an upgraded COB mini light for more money if the entire unit was shelled in metal.
These COB safety lights I’m reviewing for pedestrian use today have a metal frame and plastic body, both gunmetal black so you can only tell the difference when you rub the surface by fingertip.
Dreaming for 2030, I hope for premium quality COB safety lights made to these exact specifications, except with full metal durability.
I chose this particular COB flashlight because of its lanyard-style clip mechanism.
The clip at one edge of the square unit is perfect to clip onto a backpack or a belt loop.
The clip is good for transporting, but not the best for shining light that hurts your eyes.
The clip is best used when the light is powered OFF. When clipped onto my bag, the light dangles back and forth with strong light getting too bright in my eyes.
When powered ON, it’s better to operate the COB safety light by hand.
Bonus! This COB safety light works great as a worklight.
OK, here is a feature that you probably can’t even see from internet pictures.
Oh now you can.
This thing comes with a back prop that you just grab out with your index finger.
Because it’s got a square-shaped prop in the back that acts like a tripod. While working in the garage, you prop your COB up and position it to shine on your job EZ.
I actually use it for setting up a little flare on the sidewalk at night.
It’s my little personal pedestrian flare.
When I’m standing on the side of a busy street, I need to make sure cars see me.
Safety Warning: Cars don’t always watch for pedestrians. Stay safe when walking on the sidewalk.
Because the circle magnet on the back of this COB safety light clings to a fridge, a toolbox, and any flat metal surface.
If your family of four owns a refrigerator in your kitchen, then keep four or eight COB safety lights to grab before members go nightwalking.
Safety Warning: The magnet ruins your iPhone and other electronics. Don’t put the COB’s magnet in the same pocket as your iPhone.
Let me re-cap this great COB light power system. With a battery that lasts.
Plug it in to see the RED while charging, then after an hour it’ll turn GREEN for 100% charged. I love it. It’s beautiful.
Believe it or not, the COB’s recharging part is ranked only four out of five stars. The charger is USB-C, so Android phone users can use the same charger as their phone, but iPhone users need to hassle with an extra USB-C type charger.
When I gift free flashlights to friends on the sidewalk, it’s better to offer a CLIPLIGHT because its power source of store-bought batteries is more reliable to the home insecure than the COB Safety Light’s rechargeable internal battery. Homeless people don’t want to find a public outlet to charge a COB safety light to charge for one night’s use. People carrying power sources on their person is more common these days, but not always in budget for someone who can’t make rent.
If you drop it, don’t worry. I drop my COB unit once per week, and it’s still working for over 6 months. After scuffing my COB on the hard sidewalk, I see scuffs of silver metal exposed from underneath the black paint.
I haven’t tested the can opener on the side.
